John's Story
John is a patient representative of the Norfolk Renal Fund and has kindly shared his story:
"I was diagnosed with kidney disease when I was 20. When I was diagnosed I was worried about what it would mean to my life in the future. However, I was put at ease by the kidney doctors and nurses explaining my options such as what type of dialysis I could receive (peritoneal dialysis (PD), home haemodialysis or in-centre haemodialysis). I attended workshops, which included speaking to existing patients and learning how they dealt with their dialysis choices. This helped me decide to have PD as for me, it gave me more freedom in my personal life and the ability to carry on with certain sports.
I started on PD from March 2020 until I was called for the transplant in October 2021.
I am a very keen sportsmen who plays at a highly competitive standard for both football and cricket. After my transplant I was back playing competitive sport in January 2022 and it’s been brilliant to have normality back again."
